NOTICE: RAM Membership Form

The RAM membership form is posted on this blog in the January 2013 page.
Prospective new members and members wishing to renew/amend details of their membership are kindly asked to copy the form, print and fill in the form with the required details. The form together with the relative membership fee can be posted to the address appearing on the form. Cheques should be made payable to the Ramblers' Association of Malta.

AGM

The last Annual General Meeting was held on Saturday 16th February 2013.

The meeting was held in the chapel of Ta' Braxia Military Cemetery. Many thanks to the government health division.

Our beginnings

The Ramblers Association of Malta was set up in February 2005 on the initiative of Lino Bugeja who had long led a one-man campaign in the press against whole swathes of countryside and a good number of country paths and lanes being closed off little by little by means of gates, fences and those ubiquitous signs claiming " RTO " or suchlike. The initial meeting to set up the association held at the Din l-Art Helwa premises in Valletta attracted a turnout of around 300 persons eager to share their experiences and do something positive to reclaim the countryside for the benefit of all. An ad-hoc committee was set up to start the ball rolling in preparation for the first general meeting held in October 2005. Once again the public responded positively to this meeting and a committee was elected to serve for two years with the energetic Lino Bugeja being reconfirmed as President of the Association

Refrain from collecting or causing harm to any specimens of flora, fauna, geological items such as fossils and stalactites or archaeological artefacts.

Respect natural habitats, sensitive sites and the local inhabitants. Tread lightly and avoid disturbance.
Avoid causing noise and light pollution (especially in caves or at night)
Do not dispose of any waste in the countryside or sea
Do not light fires in vulnerable locations such as caves, beneath trees, on dry grass or garigue areas
Keep to paths where possible – avoid trespassing on defined private property and cultivated fields.
Avoid trampling
Be informed beforehand of the protection status of any sites you will be passing through – some activities may be restricted in such areas or at least they may require extra attention upon visiting
Report any grass fires or emergencies on 112
Enjoy the countryside!

Report environmental issues to MEPA on their new (Sept 2009) 24-hour emergency tel no: 2069 9595.

As per the MEPA advert, this should be used for all emergency reports related to pollution, littering, nature protection, illegal development, construction site management.

If you encounter injured wildlife contact immediately International Animal Rescue Malta (Mr Max Farrugia mobile: 9947 1212)

If you encounter marine wildlife (injured/stranded/dead) contact Nature Trust’s Marine Rescue Team on 9942 2085/6.

Report sightings of marine mammals, reptiles and sharks to Nature Trust on 9942 2085/6 or mailto:info@naturetrustmalta.org

Be extremely cautious when handling injured animals!
